Using References

The above picture was drawn using stock photos of people in various poses. I found a nice DeviantArt group on this while busy looking at other artworks and I have stumbled upon a gold mine.

Using references is very good in learning how to draw better and more efficiently once you get the hang of how this works, how that works, blah, blah, blah, you know what I mean, you'll know where to draw your lines!

I love relying on references to help guide me in my drawings. This is something I will be doing from now on as I continue to improve :)

Yup, I'm going back to school for the fall. Yes I finally got into a drawing class. Yes, I am a very happy panda.

Very eager to learn. Can't wait.

In the meanwhile, though, I would really love to get a small part-time gig going for the summer. I'm still not very worthy of being able to make money off my artwork... And there's things I'd also like to have done during the summer as well...

So recently I've gone back to the pencil, after many months of using the micron pens. I don't think anything can ever replace the pencil... I simply cannot work with a pen tablet for drawing, the feeling just isn't there, or with a micron it feels pretty loose, but then again I don't really have a desk that I can draw comfortably on yet....

Every now and then I come back to something I've actually gotten up, pulled out a few sheets of looseleaf and started writing. A screenplay for an animated film. It's only about 5-6 pages long and all that and I put an extreme amount of thought into every line I write, which makes it pretty difficult to drive the story the way I want it to, but then again the slow pace I'm going at helps push me along in the right direction:

I found this neat article on Wikipedia about screenwriting theories, and Syd Field's Paradigm was one that stood out to me quite a bit because it's pretty much how I'm planning this thing out, as it goes:

Opening Image: The first image in the screenplay should summarize the entire film, especially its tone. Often, writers go back and redo this as the last thing before submitting the script.

Inciting Incident: Also called the catalyst, this is the point in the story when the Protagonist encounters the problem that will change their life. This is when the detective is assigned the case, where Boy meets Girl, and where the Comic Hero gets fired from his cushy job, forcing him into comic circumstances.

Plot Point 1: The last scene in Act One, Turning Point One is a surprising development that radically changes the Protagonist's life, and forces him to confront the Opponent.

Pinch 1: A reminder scene at about 3/8 the way through the script (halfway through Act 2a) that brings up the central conflict of the drama, reminding us of the overall conflict.

Midpoint: An important scene in the middle of the script, often a reversal of fortune or revelation that changes the direction of the story. Field suggests that driving the story towards the Midpoint keeps the second act from sagging.

Pinch 2: Another reminder scene about 5/8 through the script (halfway through Act 2b) that is somehow linked to Pinch 1 in reminding the audience about the central conflict.

Plot Point 2: A dramatic reversal that ends Act 2 and begins Act 3, which is about confrontation and resolution. Sometimes Turning Point Two is the moment when the Hero has had enough and is finally going to face the Opponent. Sometimes, like in Toy Story, it's the low-point for the Hero, and he must bounce back to overcome the odds in Act 3.

Showdown: About midway through Act 3, the Protagonist will confront the Main Problem of the story and either overcome it, or come to a tragic end.

Resolution: The issues of the story are resolved.

Tag: An epilogue, tying up the loose ends of the story, giving the audience closure.

In this case, the "hero" of my little story is actually a "heroine", and hers is a story of loyalty and friendship. In this case... I'm basically writing a story of how my four characters Vanessa, Darren, Daisy and Petey all came to be and how they pulled through the hell that we call high school and beyond... I'm putting a little more of the focus on Vanessa and Darren's relationship because they're actually the "main characters" as opposed to Daisy and Petey, Daisy is Vanessa's best friend and her cousin Petey likes to hang around with Darren when not as a group. I'm taking this all into consideration as I write this-

Like a slight example here:

Opening Image- This is where I tell all of you how Vanessa and Darren first meet, when they befriend the cousins, a few clips here and there of how their relationships developed even further over the course of a few years up until the present time where I'm setting the stage for the action

Inciting Incident- - Vanessa gets a taste of being a well known personality in the school after a stint at a teen bash, thus abandoning her friends to be with the "cool crowd"; Darren begins to mingle with other females, Daisy, after having failed to change Vanessa's mind about her newfound popularity, slowly becomes her worst enemy, and Petey, well he's pretty much finding new interests on his own, I'm still working out the details

Plot Point 1- Vanessa's newfound sense of conceit and holier-than-thou attitude causes more trouble than expected, and the 'leader' of the cool crowd plots to bring her down- HARD. She gains a new love interest in the form of a swave-looking male who really isn't who she makes out to be, her relationships with Darren, Daisy and Petey are slowly severed and things basically start following apart

Pinch 1- A confrontation scene between the four friends

Midpoint- Vanessa becomes involved in several teen-oriented activities (both bad and good) and making herself the "talk of the town". She also takes the time to explore her new "love interest", who is actually the boyfriend of the cool crowd "leader", much to her surprise. The leader of the cool crowd sets the events into motion that will reduce Vanessa to rubble...

Pinch 2- Vanessa realizes that her new life isn't as great as she's expected it to be, and attempts to redeem herself, but is rejected...

Plot Point 2- Knowing all along of her boyfriend's flings with Vanessa and the fact that her plans to ruin her have all but failed the leader of the cool crowd sets out to take care of business herself, in the meanwhile the friends rethink their friend's cries for help and finally decide to forgive her

Showdown- Vanessa faces her ultimate challenge, something that could possibly change her life for the worse, but her options are limited...

Resolution- The issues of the story are resolved.

Tag- An epilogue, tying up the loose ends of the story, giving the audience closure.
